Lionel Hampton was born on April 20, 1908, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was an American jazz musician and bandleader known for the rhythmic vitality of his playing and his showmanship as a performer. Best known for his work on the vibraphone, Hampton was also a skilled drummer and pianist. Musician extraordinaire Hampton died on August 31, 2002, at the age of 94. His legacy as a musician, statesman and humanitarian is chronicled in this program. Tony Brown also remembers this music legend's love for the little guy.
